Why a 5.3% Long Bond Has Not Broken U.S. Stocks

With the 30-year Treasury at 5.31% and the real yield at 3.06%, U.S. stocks face a valuation squeeze. Earnings growth and easy financial conditions have limited the index damage, even as weaker balance sheets face rising financing costs.

U.S. Treasury data published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis put the 30-year bond at 5.31% on August 17. The last higher close was 5.35% on June 12, 2007. The comparison is striking, but the more consequential number for equities appears in the 30-year real yield. It reached 3.06%, the highest observation since that series began in 2010.

Subtracting the real yield from the nominal yield gives roughly 2.25 percentage points. Liquidity and risk premiums prevent that spread from serving as a clean inflation forecast. It does make the character of the move clearer: investors are demanding far more real compensation for holding long-duration government debt.

The New York Fed's Adrian, Crump, and Moench estimate points in the same direction farther down the curve. Its 10-year term premium rose from 0.51% at the end of June to 0.84% at the end of July. Part of the rate increase is therefore the price of duration itself, which includes uncertainty about inflation, fiscal supply, and the eventual path of short rates.

Earnings are carrying more weight

A high real yield reduces what investors should pay for distant cash flows. An index can still rise if the cash flows themselves grow fast enough. That offset is now unusually large.

FactSet's August 7 Earnings Insight put blended S&P 500 earnings growth for the second quarter at 50.4%. Alphabet and Amazon contributed an unusual amount to that figure, but growth was still 32.0% with both companies excluded. Analysts were projecting growth of 27.4% for the third quarter, 25.2% for the fourth quarter, and 30.0% for calendar 2026.

Those estimates can be revised, and the headline growth rates are not a permanent run rate. They nevertheless explain why the index has absorbed a rate that looks hostile in isolation. The forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio was 20.0, almost equal to its five-year average of 19.9. That is not cheap with real yields above 3%. It is also lower than the price investors would have paid if earnings estimates had stayed flat while the index rose.

The 2007 comparison is incomplete for the same reason. Profit growth, bank balance sheets, index composition, and corporate refinancing schedules are different today. A familiar yield does not recreate the market that surrounded it.

Financial conditions have not followed the long bond

If a 5.31% long bond were breaking the market's financing machinery, the stress should appear beyond Treasury screens. The Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index was -0.549 for the week ended August 7. A negative reading means conditions were looser than their historical average after combining signals from money markets, debt and equity markets, and the banking system.

Equity issuance, credit availability, market volatility, and bank funding can remain workable while the long bond presses on valuation. The result is selective damage. Businesses that depend on distant profits or frequent refinancing suffer first, without forcing every investor to sell at once.

A persistent long-rate increase eventually reaches mortgages, corporate debt, project finance, and government interest expense. The current NFCI reading indicates that this transmission is still incomplete.

A higher real rate changes the valuation math

The 30-year Treasury yield is not the single discount rate used for the S&P 500. Equity investors usually care more directly about the 10-year real yield, expected earnings growth, risk premiums, and the timing of cash flows. The long bond still matters because it reveals the price investors demand for committing capital far into the future.

A simple perpetuity illustrates the sensitivity. Suppose value equals next year's cash flow divided by the difference between the required return and long-run growth. If the spread between those two inputs rises by 0.50 percentage points, the result changes as follows, with cash flow and growth held constant:

The exercise is deliberately simple. It shows why expensive companies with cash flows weighted far into the future feel a real-rate increase first. Fast near-term cash growth can offset some of the damage, especially when investors believe that growth will last.

That is close to the current equity response. Valuation math has tightened while earnings have improved. Market leadership then narrows toward companies with realized cash generation, and stories that require cheap capital become harder to finance.

The operating hit arrives with a lag

Valuation adjusts in seconds. Corporate interest expense adjusts when debt matures. A company that locked in low coupons for ten years can look insulated even while the replacement cost of that debt has doubled. The pressure becomes visible later, at refinancing dates, in acquisition models, and in projects that no longer clear the required return.

Federal borrowing could help keep pressure on the long end. The Congressional Budget Office's 2026 to 2036 outlook projects a $1.9 trillion federal deficit for fiscal 2026, equal to 5.8% of GDP. Debt held by the public rises from 101% of GDP in 2026 to 120% in 2036 under its baseline. The forecast cannot determine the path of yields. It does describe a market that must absorb a large supply of Treasury securities while net interest costs consume more of the budget.

For the private economy, the important variable is how long the new hurdle rate lasts. A brief spike mostly changes quoted valuations. Several years near current real yields would change capital spending, housing affordability, commercial property refinancing, and the economics of leveraged acquisitions.

The market is becoming a balance-sheet test

The vulnerable group is broader than long-duration technology. Unprofitable growth companies have the most obvious exposure because much of their estimated value sits in distant years. Leveraged small companies face a second problem: they often refinance sooner and at wider spreads than large issuers. Utilities, real estate, homebuilders, and infrastructure projects compete directly with a now-attractive risk-free yield and depend on financing costs in their operating models.

Cash-rich companies with current profits have more room. They can fund investment internally, earn more interest on cash, and wait for better borrowing terms. Many large technology companies fall into this category even though the market still treats their equity as duration-sensitive. That helps explain why a high long bond can hurt speculative growth without producing the same result in the largest index weights.

Banks are mixed. Higher long rates can support asset yields, but the benefit shrinks if deposit costs rise, loan demand weakens, or securities portfolios carry unrealized losses. The steepness of the curve and the quality of credit matter more than the level of the 30-year bond by itself.

What would turn pressure into a broad drawdown

My assessment is 6 out of 10 for current market impact. The long bond is already important enough to cap valuation multiples, change sector leadership, and raise the penalty for weak balance sheets. It is not yet producing the broad financial tightening that usually turns a valuation problem into forced selling.

The risk would move closer to 8 out of 10 if the 30-year real yield stayed near or above 3% while the term premium kept rising. The move would become more dangerous if earnings estimates fell at the same time. An NFCI reading tightening toward zero or above it would confirm that the shock had spread into credit, funding, and market volatility.

The 6 and 8 scores are judgment calls, not outputs from a trading model. A high long rate can be absorbed while profits grow and financing remains available. Falling earnings and tightening credit would remove both cushions.

For now, the cost is visible in valuation ceilings and a harsher divide between strong and weak balance sheets. If the real yield stays above 3%, that divide will migrate from stock prices into corporate decisions. The long bond can leave a large mark on U.S. equities without producing an immediate crash.
